Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis of chloroplast DNA was used to study the relationships within the genus Nicotiana. Resulting phylogenetic tree, reconstructed using the UPGMA method, generally agreed with the existing taxonomic classification based on morphological and cytogenetic data, as well as sequence comparison of the internal transcribed spacer of the nuclear ribosomal DNA.
