Представники родини Brassicaceae є важливими олійними, овочевими та кормовими культурами. Види Brassicaceae також використовують для фіторемедіації ґрунтів, забруднених важкими металами, або як сидерати та декоративні рослини. Розширення біорізноманіття вже існуючих сортів культивованих Brassicaceae шляхом генно-інженерних маніпуляцій може підвищити стійкість до біотичних і абіотичних стресів, підвищити продуктивність рослин і якість продукції. Метод злиття протопластів робить можливим штучне створення різноманітних соматичних гібридів між різними видами рослин. В огляді представлено досягнення у злитті протопластів культивованих видів роду Brassica та їх диких родичів; основні напрямки соматичної гібридизації у Brassicaceae; умови отримання та селекції соматичних гібридів; особливості успадкування генетичного матеріалу; інтро-гресію господарсько важливих ознак до культивованих видів Brassicaceae шляхом соматичної гібридизації; ресинтез алотетраплоїдних видів, створення алоплазматичних ліній з цитоплазматичною чоловічою стерильністю (ЦЧС) та соматичних гібридів для фіторемедіації забруднених важкими металами ґрунтів, а також отримання транспластомних рослин шляхом перенесення генетично змінених пластид методом злиття протопластів.
