γ-Tubulin is a ubiquitous phylogenetically conserved member of tubulin superfamily. In comparison with αβ-tubulin dimers, it is a low abundance protein present within the cells in both various types of microtubule-organizing centers and cytoplasmic protein complexes. γ-Tubulin small complexes are subunits of the γ-tubulin ring complex, which is involved in microtubule nucleation and capping of the minus ends of microtubules. In the past years important findings have advanced the understanding of the structure and function of γ-tubulin ring complexes. Recent evidences suggest that the functions of γ-tubulin extend beyond microtubule nucleation.
