Achievements, problems and prospects of the genetic transformation of fungi

Review
SUMMARY. The article highlights achievements, problems and prospects of genetic transformation of fungi. The features of fungi distinguishing them from other organisms, which should be taken into account when preparing the material for transformation, are analyzed. The methods allowing overcoming the problems connected with the apical growth of hyphae, the thickness of the cell wall, heterokaryoticity, and the mechanisms of immune defense are described. A comparative analysis of the main methods of transformation of fungi at different stages of their life cycle is carried out. The problem of stability of genetically modified fungi and the prospects for the practical application of transformation are considered.
